SCHOOL READINESS CLASSES
Taking the leap to primary school is an exciting event. Give your child a head start to gain maximum learning as they embark on this stage and you’ll make their transition from the early learning years to the primary school years as smooth as possible. Our School Readiness program begins at the age of 3 and continues through to the year before your child starts school.
Classes are 1 hour long and consist of 4 children. 3 year old classes are 30 minutes literacy and 30 minutes numeracy.
4-5 year old children have 1 hour of literacy or one hour of numeracy. Classes will be back to back if your preference is to do both numeracy and literacy.
Literacy and language
A student’s level of phonological awareness at the end of kindergarten is one of the strongest predictors of future reading success.
Classes include:
- phonological awareness
- phonemic awareness
- phonics and CVC words
- name recognition and using name cards to learn to write their name
- exploring stories; comprehension, beginning, middle and end
- news
- asking questions
- sharing ideas
- listening to others and taking turns to speak
Numeracy
Classes include:- Counting
- Number recognition
- Shape recognition
- Completing puzzles
- Exploring mathematical concepts and problem solving using concrete materials
Resilience building (1 hour)
Classes include
- Exploring emotions, socially acceptable behaviours and building friendships through books, games and role play
- Practising sharing and taking turns
- Learning to negotiate and respect the opinions of others
- Mildfulness
- Yoga
Mixed age classes 3-5
Fine motor (30 mins)
Classes include:
- Building on finger muscles using a variety of games and materials such as tweezers, chopsticks, playdough and threading
- Exploring a wide range of literacy tools
- Learning to use scissors correctly
